How to Clean Garden Statues

Cleaning your outdoor sculptures regularly and removing mold extends their life and keeps details sharp. Follow these simple steps for cleaning your garden statuary, based on type.

Concrete

  1. Add 2 ounces of sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda) to one gallon of hot water and stir. Set aside.
  2. Using a garden hose, wet statue thoroughly. Gently scrub statue with washing mixture using plastic scrub brush.
  3. Rinse with water until washing mixture residue is gone.

Bronze

  1. Stir together nonionic cleaner, water, and a bit of spot-free dishwasher rinse.
  2. Use mixture to dampen a soft cloth and wipe down the statue. (For hard-to-reach spots, use a non-wire scrub brush.)
  3. Keep mixture on the statue for a few minutes. This will help dissolve any deposits or dried bird droppings.
  4. Remove any soap mixture by spraying statue with a garden hose, then dry with a soft cloth. Allow to dry for two days.
  5. After drying period, apply a thin layer of commercial wax with a plastic scrub brush and allow to dry for 20 minutes.
  6. Buff wax with soft cloth.

Marble

  1. Mix one-half tablespoon liquid dish soap into one gallon hot water. (Be careful, adding too much soap can cause streaking.)
  2. Use a soft cloth to wipe down statue with soap mixture, using a little pressure.

Rinse with garden hose, then wipe down statue with clean, soft cloth
